as Edwin requested, please add a feature request with a nice screenshot for the customizable connection feature to our bug db.
Regarding the speed: we are continually working on that and have reached a big improvement in 5.1 over 5.0, in particular on Mac OS X and Linux. Windows is still a bit slower due to additional layers we need to communicate between our platform neutral layers and the native UI. In no case is Java in the game, though. Not sure where you got the idea from (or is it just the association "Slowness == Java"?, if so, that is completely wrong too).
