Having investigated further I think mysqldump is picking up a password from a local .cnf file, and that's not the appropriate when the instance I'mme connected to is a remote one. If I remove the password from the local .cnf file then Workbench seems to supply the password from the Gnome keyring and all works as expected.

It appears that the keyring takes priority over the .cnf file for connections but the other way around for invoking mysqldump. Is there any way I can force Workbench to use the keyring values when exporting?
