Robert, did you assign a valid path to the configuration file in the connection settings? That is necessary to make the config editor work. You can even set a path to a file that doesn't exist yet (e.g. /etc/mysql.cnf). By default there's no config file on OSX when you install a server. So MySQL Workbench has to create it.
