Greg,

as I wrote: this is a SERVER default configuration bug. That means it's about server configuration and only if you don't specify the port explicitly.

So the proper solution is to create a config file for your server and specify the port to use there. MySQL Workbench will happily use any port you specify in the settings for a connection.
