On my side, I have experienced the exact same problem (endless loop + can't quit), but on MacOS 10.12.6.
Workbench used to work like a charm and then started acting up (hanging AND frequently 'unexpectedly quit'). At the time, being in the rush of a project, I didn't get to the bottom of it and started using another SQL client. But now I would love to be able to go back workbench.

MacBook Air (13-inch, early 2015)
8Gb RAM
OSX 10.12.6
Workbench 6.2.5.0 Community
