An exception like that is probably a WB bug, eg https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=102537, that page asks "Did you click on "Server Status or Client Connections" from MySQL workbench Administration tab?" I f that doesn't lead to a resolution, consider adding info to that bug page.
