For a reason I've never understood, MySQL installation on the Mac does not create a my.cnf instance. For hints on how to find or create it see "Find config files" at
https://www.artfulsoftware.com/infotree/mysqltips.php.
If the MySQL server isn't running, read the MySQL error log (in the MySQL data folder) for error messages.
