My bad. I thought I could only run the import wizard off the schema table listing. Turns out that tables are accessable via sql even though the UI makes you think the tables aren't there. I can invoke the import wizard off the result grid.

I can't edit my last note so I added this one. I'm still interested in fixing mysql workbench, but at least I seem to be able to run the import wizard, which is my main concern.

Of course it's not working. There's a problem that the csv can't be loaded, but I'm guessing this is a windows file recovered on a mac thing. But, I expect to be able to solve this hiccup.
