We have the same issue too.
Version 8.0.38 works fine. Upgrade to 8.0.40 and we get the error whenever connecting to any server.
All our server throw "Authentication plugin '' cannot be loaded".
Even if we create a new connection to the server, we get the same error, so it's not a config issue on the workbench side. Seems to me like a compatibility issue maybe between the workbench and server.
Our server is on version 8.0.39
