Recovering DB from another drive?

I have two identical machines: couple of year old Xeons, running Ubuntu 11.04
Following a glitch with an Ubuntu kernel upgrade (a seeming world of pain for 11), one of these machines has become unbootable.

It would be useful to pull data from this machine's MySQL DB (MediaWiki) and to do this more quickly than I'm likely to get the OS problem sorted out. Restoring from the latest backups would lose a couple of days' work. To pull some files across I just opened up the cases and swapped the drive across. Is there any way to do something similar for the MySQL DB? The target machine isn't currently running MySQL, so I can easily stomp on anything there already.

Thanks

Also, any advice on upgrading Ubuntu 11 to Windows Vista? 8-(
