How to restore 153GB Database

Hello,
I am working with MySQL Server version: 5.0.95 due to legacy software. I have a very large database (153GB) that I am trying to restore but every time we get:
ERROR 2006 (HY000): MySQL server has gone away.
followed by
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server
I have searched but can only come up with increase max_allowed_packet and bulk_insert_buffer_size. I have increased the max_allowed_packet and bulk_insert_buffer_size incrementally until now. They have reached max size. I have dumped the current DB a couple of different ways and tried restoring from those, but nothing seems to work.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.
