I don't believe this can currently be done because innodb stores the undo logs and data dictionary in the shared tablespace even in the case of innodb_file_per_table.

It would be great to be able to do this with partitions as well:

add an empty partition to a table, replace the partition data file created with one from another database or backup, and then automatically be able to see the data in the new partition (something like a switch partition in Oracle), but I couldn't get that to work either.

The hot_backup tool from innobase may be able to do some of what you are looking for, but it's a commercial product
