Best backup strategy

Hi

I currently take raw incremental backups of my entire server (centos linux with web, mysql, mail etc ) to a remote host using backuppc (http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/)

I'm wondering if I'll be able to restore mysql databases simply restoring the files in /var/lib/mysql/databasename/
Would I need to restore other files out of that directory?

Or you recommend me to make dumps of the databases daily and keep a copy of the dumps as well?

I'm not running critical apps, daily backups are more than enough.

Which backup method is better?

thank you
