Starting the spawned server on port 3306 ... ERROR: Cannot find location of mysqld

I am attempting to recover tables from the the .frm files. I installed the mysql-utilities and the connector-python. All fires up ok. However, when I go to run the mysqlfrm command, it errors:

Starting the spawned server on port 3306 ... ERROR: Cannot find location of mysqld

I'm running mariadb. I've run into this before, and installing mysql-connector resolved it. But I don't know how to resolve this one.

Any words of wisdom or point me in the right direction would be appreciated.
