Restoring a cold backup

Bear with me, I am new at this MySQL stuff.
I have a cold backup of my databases. By this, I mean they are the physical files (.frm, .ibd). I had read (using Google) that I merely needed to copy them to the physical location of the new database and everything would just work.

I have found this to not be the case.

So, I have several database cold backups. How do I restore them? Copying them to their new computer does not work. I looked through the MySQL documentation and it talks about making a cold backup, but not restoring one, so I assume there is some level of common MySQL knowledge I am missing.

Thanks.
