Replaying binary log?

I worked for a while in a company, where they had found a way to replay the binlogs, in order to restore a database up to a given time after the time of the newest backup; however, I can't find any references to how this is done.

In Percona's documentation for innobackupex, they mention the log sequence number - is this the same as the 'end_log_pos' that can be found in the binlog files (using the mysqlbinlog command)?

I don't know how the DBAs in this company did, only that they did it as a matter of routine. Any ideas?
