What do I need to know?

Im a bit Confused here, I've used C++ plenty before, and MySQL a good bit. How do I start writing programs that interface them. (like if I want to write a C++ program that accesses a MYSQL database?)

I've seen things like the Mysql C API and the C++ Connector and MYSQL++? are they different things? if so which should I use (since I mostly use C++)

It seems MySQL++ is the "latest" one? if so how would I go about Installing thing on a Linux Machine?
