Missing error when executing HANDLER READ

Hello,

when executing a HANDLER READ with too many key parts via mysql command line client the following error appears "ERROR 1070 (42000): Too many key parts specified; max 4 parts allowed"

When doing the same via mysql_query no error is returned. Mysql_query seems to be successful but there is no result set.
mysql_error and mysql_errno don't return any error.

Any ideas? What am I doing wrong?
