mysql_library_end is really slow

I have an MFC app under Visual Studio 2005 that uses the C API for MySQL. When the app is shutdown, mysql_library_end() is called in the CWinApp destructor. I have timed the call multiple times both on a Core i7 system with Windows 7 and a Core i5 system with Windows XP. In each case, the call takes 5 seconds. What are the possible culprits causing such a long execution time?
