my mistake
I was not looking right, thought you were referencing the MYSQL_FIELD* f that you declared on top, but you're not. You are referencing the fields member of the MYSQL_RES structure directly, which should work fine.
I tested it the way you do it and it works fine here, so I don't know what's going wrong.
