Yup. But with great effort comes great reward. Our research requires a new data type that will be used to contain the data specific to our research area. As a result, we understand very much that MySQL will need to be heavily modified and, in fact, we've already made quite a few modifications. But this does not 'no longer make it MySQL'. In fact, that's the beauty of MySQL. Modifications, improvements and enhancements are what open source MySQL is all about. :o)
I've got a line on the creation of a new data type and will keep you posted. I think you'll be surprised how...well, maybe not 'straight forward', but how surprisingly little needs to be done to MySQL to create one...IF you're willing to get your hands dirty.
