Hi Garey,
first of all, could you check that you have the line "ndbcluster" as well as the connect-string to use in your my.cnf file and just to make sure, point the mysqld to the correct my.cnf file by using the --defaults-file=<path-to-my.cnf> when you start it.
Firewall settings could be another cause but let's rule out the config files first.
Let us know how you get on and if you still have problems, please post your my.cnf file here.
