Thanks. The url in the link to reset root password brings me back to the contents page. I dod a google search and found https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/resetting-permissions.html. I started following the instructions. Many complications, trial-and-error. Discovered I had to rum the command prompt as administrator. Dealt with various other issues.

I am now at a halt, facing:
2017-03-15T21:15:47.592455Z 0 [Note] InnoDB: Loading buffer pool(s) from C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.7\data\ib_buffer_pool
mysqld: Table 'mysql.plugin' doesn't exist
2017-03-15T21:15:47.592959Z 0 [ERROR] Can't open the mysql.plugin table. Please run mysql_upgrade to create it.
2017-03-15T21:15:47.593960Z 0 [ERROR] unknown variable 'defaults-file=C:\\Program Files\\MySQL\\MySQL Server 5.7\\my.ini'
2017-03-15T21:15:47.593960Z 0 [ERROR] Aborting

When I run mysql_upgrade I get:
mysql_upgrade: Got error: 1045: Access denied for user 'ODBC'@'localhost' (using password: NO) while connecting to the MySQL server
Upgrade process encountered error and will not continue.

All I want is to completely rid my system of all traces of MySQL and start over. Is there a way to do that?
