MySQL Installer 8.0.11 does not accept root password

I'm trying to reconfigure my server but am blocked by the "Accounts and Roles" screen. When I get to that screen it prompts for the root password, which I enter and press the "Check" button. Then the wizard hangs, after it comes back it tells me the password is incorrect (but it's NOT!), and I cannot continue.
Using the same password to connect to MySQL from the command-line works perfectly. Is the problem perhaps that my root user is not named "root"?
