Data Dir reset during upgrade

Hi,

We have a 8.0.19 version upgraded towards the 8.0.32 version.
But after the upgrade the custom datadir (d:\data) was configured back to the default one (c:\programdata\mysql\mysql server 8.0\data)

How can this be corrected back to the initial (d:\data) dir?
I'm aware we can change the data dir in the my.ini file.

Can this be done so that the database/schemas (under d:\data) are visible again in the workbench tool?

Or should I backup the database, do the upgrade and then restore it into then new 8.0.32 environment?
