another newbie question: "unspecified error" in ODBC

hallo, following the docs I have set up a DSN using the control panel ODBC administrator tool.
now i am trying to connect from excel, using the data connection wizard
i click on ODBC DSN, and I am shown the one i just created.
there i tick the radio button "Use data source name", and from the menu choose the right one, and i enter the user name and password.
Alas when i press "Test Connection" I get

"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider. Unspecified error"

any help much appreciated

PS: I have the MySQL for Excel also in - does it conflict?
