Hi Roland,
The MySQL Installer will not overwrite any existing installation of the MySQL Server, you should be able to do a customized installation and just select MySQL for Excel (or any specific products you want installed) without to upgrade the Server.
Although upgrading the Server should not do any harm to the database either.
Have you tried the custom installation? You should be able to choose it when launching the Installer.
