Hi Clare,
Thanks for writing in our forums!

Currently there is no support for SSH connections. MySQL for Excel uses MySQL Connector/NET to connect and communicate with MySQL databases. Connector/NET does not have SSH support as of now but it will be included, so when it does MySQL for Excel will be able to use SSH as well.

For now the connections appear gray and the MySQL for Excel documentation states it is a known limitation in the current version.
