Javier,

Thank you for your diligence & timely responses. I have tried the msi-only route (i.e. not using the installer) previously for the MySQL for Excel upgrade, & it did upgrade successfully, but I still had my original issue that the workaround I stumbled on last night in my other message finally solved. So I could go back and pursue the msi download route you suggest, but ....

.... the msi-only route also introduced another issue: after using msi's on a package outside the normal installer, the installer would subsequently stop working (for example if I went to check for updates using the installer) & tell me something to the effect that "you have downloaded a commercial version & I need to switch you over to a GPL licensed version" - I forget the exact error message - then it would crash & be totally unusable. I saw others having that issue also elsewhere on the forums & chased it for a bit, but gave up.

At this point, with a setup that will work for me, I am going to declare victory & move on & perhaps revisit all this at the next major release.
