Thanks for writing in our forums.
As far as I know NULL should have never worked to represent a null value, but an empty string should work (""), if it does not work it means you found a bug. If you can reproduce this consistently please raise a bug report at http://bugs.mysql.com so it can be fixed. Just include detailed steps to reproduce the scenario.
