Matt,
Thanks for updating the bug. The information I was requesting from you was ONLY to avoid the bug gets rejected (as unable to duplicate) and/or to reduce the fixing time. Again sorry if you misunderstood the bug would be rendered as non-existent since the intention is totally the opposite.

With the information you provided we will take a look at this problem.

I am sorry to be unable to give you a workaround using a formula, the workaround that would work would be to leave the cell empty (thus removing the formula from the cell).

You can subscribe to the bug you raised in order to be notifier when the bug is fixed.
