1064 Syntax Error

I have successfully installed MYSQL for Excel along with Excel 2010. I can access tables. What I can't seem to do is edit the data without getting the dreaded 1064 error code. This is a simple insert of a name in one cell. The name isn't a reserved word and I've tried multiple other words as well. I've added backticks before and after, just before and just after. I've added ' before and after, just before and just after. And the same for double quotes. I have tried the same thing in other columns with the same result ... 1064.
What magical incantations are required or is it a witch's potion?
