Hi,
The user experience when creating a connection on MySQL for Excel should be exactly the same as the one you see when doing so in MySQL Workbench.
The reason for seeing differences is because they use different underlying technologies to communicate with a MySQL Server. You may have found a bug, but not sure with the information you are providing here.
Can you post the full error message along with a stack trace here?
Or try accessing the application log at %APPDATA%\Oracle\MySQL for Excel and find the error and the stack trace there.
