Yes, it should log you right in, should not be in a waiting state.
Does your user have admin rights to browse schemas and other DB objects?
Moving the records to the tables should not be a problem.
Have you tried to verify you can connect via the MySQL prompt or with a different program like MySQL Workbench or the MySQL Shell using exactly the same connection parameters you are trying in MySQL for Excel?
