This seems to be related to this bug report:

This seems to be caused by Office itself, not sure if there is a bug in some Office versions that relates to COM add-ins, but I don't understand how the issue is solvable by running the command you mentioned before (C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun>OfficeC2RClient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.11601.20144), or rolling back to a specific Office version.

While we will investigate on our end if there is anything we can do on the COM add-in in order to solve this problem, I can't say for sure this is solvable from our end.

You can subscribe to the bug report in order to get updates.
Also any information you can provide about what triggered the lost of the connections list will be very helpful to understand how the problem arose and attempt to fix it (if possible).
