Hello Bobby,
thank you for posting your question in the MySQL for Visual Studio forum.

Project templates (which allowed the creation of MySQL projects) were removed in version 1.2.5. Since then, item templates are available and can be accessed after a project has been created just as you are describing.

Can you describe in more detail what is failing in the dataset designer? Features related to Entity Framework require MySQL Connector/NET to be installed as well.
