What is the correct way to add an instance?

I'm looking over the documentation and I don't see any clear explanation about adding instances to an existing InnoDB Cluster using MySQL Shell.

Once binlogs are expired from the existing cluster, I imagine that using cluster.addInstance() won't work by itself because there are no binlogs to start from.

Is the correct procedure then to add it manually to the Group Replication group, and then use cluster.rescan()? Or is there a better way? Are there docs describing this scenario?
