*SERIOUS* overloading problem!! Help!

Hi All

A little background before I explain my problem: I'm more of a programmer than a server guy - frankly I find all this 'configuration' etc. quite confusing. However, I don't have any problem building PHP/MySQL sites and applying opensource solutions. Therefore, if you can explain my problem, could it be possible to do it in such a way that a lowly programmer could understand? Thanks ;)

At work I have this host - they specialise (infortunately for me) in Java and Tomcat. They "don't support" PHP and MySQL but they've installed it on our dedicated server for my use. They cannot/refuse to sort me out if any problems occur and a huge problem has occurred! Hence I find myself here asking for help.

This week I've been researching CMS's for a new project I'm working on and have chosen Geeklog CMS as it seems to have all the features i need and is easily adminable.

I tried uploading it myself but I kept getting ftp errors (never had any problems like that before - use Bulletproof ftp) - connection problems, timeout errors. So I e-mailed the package to my hosts. They replied saying the files were corrupted so they downloaded it again, completely deleted (so they say) my attempted upload and placed the files on the server for me. I then went ahead and installed it.

Everything seemed fine - that was Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday at 5pm the server went down - they said there were 47 processes in the process queue on top of disk activity... the highest they'd ever seen before was 7! It doesn't take a genius to figure this is pretty extreme!

They closed down Tomcat... nothing... they closed down Apache... nothing... they closed down MySQL and the queue diminished! They fired everything back up and it seemed fine.

However, exactly the same thing happened this evening - Thursday at exactly 5pm again!

The only thing I could think of was Geeklog CMS so I posted a question in their very extensive forums. Nobody knew what the problem could be and could only recommend generalised advice (http://www.geeklog.net/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=3&showtopic=41358). They are convinced, however, that there is nothing in Geeklog that could be the cause of the problem.

The server runs:

MySQL v 3.23.54
PHP v 4.2.2

My hosts are calling for me to remove Geeklog but that would result in the loss of a weeks work!!

Does anyone have any advice, suggestions or solutions to aid my quest? Anything and everything will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the time you've taken to read my excessive whining! :)
