UPPER with substring is not working

Guys ,
i am trying to convert Saturday to SAT by using following code.
SELECT UPPER(SUBSTRING(DAYNAME('2007-02-03'),1,3) );
It is returning as 'Sat' instead of 'SAT'
Why the UPPER function is failing ?
