Re: MySQL real world use for DW/BI

It hs been a while since we first started looking into MySQL as an alternative back end....and we spent quite a bit of time and effort to see if we could use it as a back end for our product stack.

Though it might not be 'popular' here I thought it best to put our thoughts....when these things change we would gladly give MySQL a try again.

We were able to get all tables and views migrated across....and we tested stored procedures and we were able to get some of the smaller SPs converted etc.

Where we 'fell down' was that we were never able to get MSFT Report Services to talk to MySQL 'properly'....and 'properly' meaning that the report invoked the mysql as an SP and executed the SP over on the mysql machine....

We were able to set up aliass in sql server etc but we believe this would not be a scalable solution.....

And then, after all our testing Sun bought MySQL.

So, we are going to 'wait and see' what happens to MySQL and whether it will talk to Report Services in a nicer an easier way before we spend more time and effort porting our BI Applications to it.

We will still use MySQL for a data warehouse where the client is happy to use something other than Report Services for the front end and the build is a custom build.....

Personally, I wish we could have made it all work.......but after about 10 days of effort we decided that we should give up and let someone else figure out how it might work....If anyone gets reporting services to work properly with MySQL we would be really keen to hear about it....
