Auto Increment jumps 9670 numbers

I have a MySQl database that has a members table in it. The ID field is an auto increment field that started at one and increments by one. It was at 1522 and then the next number jumped to 11192 and continued to increment from there. MySQL version 3.23.49 running on Mac OS X server. Apache 1.3.29 and PHP 4.32. If any one has any ideas I'd love to hear them.
