To combat performance issues, you could add native support for SPARQL queries to MySQL via the SPASQL module. Similar to OpenLink Virtuoso, SPASQL resides part of the internal to the DBMS engine, allowing you to run both SQL and SPARQL queries.

In my opinion, this approach enjoys the best of both worlds. Adding native SPARQL support to the database can deliver the same performance as for well-tailored SQL queries.
