I have to say I'm glad I'm not the only one surprised by this behaviour!
I'll take your suggestions and report back.
Very interesting to hear that UNION trumps OR. I take it this is a general rule of thumb for MySQL - always prefer UNION to OR? In this case the categories will be distinct so UNION is correct.
