OK, so essentially what Rick proposed earlier, except that he used an auto_increment column (would that be just as fast?) and it appears he was proposing it as an on-the-fly solution (as my original Q did not specify).
I'll give this a shot; thanks. At any rate at least I understand the problem better now!
