Debugging too many connections

I've got a lot of different scripts running on my server and lately I've been getting the "Too Many connections" error which is bringing the server to a complete halt.

Is there any way of finding out what script is responsible for leaving the connection open? Otherwise are there any log files I can check to find out any clues? I have the binary logs disabled but could reenable them to debug this problem.

The system is FreeBSD and the MySQL version is 6 (I think), (I'm not logged in right now but I'll give correct details later)

Thanks for any help,
Noel
