Embedded Server questions

Hi folks:
I have been having a heck of a time with the embedded server under Linux compiled from 4.0.21 source.
First problem (not really a problem): I can not get a shared library of libmysqld to build. It seems that it only will build a static library. Again, not really a problem as I actually prefer the static library for my app...
Second problem (and this is a real problem): is there any way to force the embedded server to be completely quiet - absolutely no emission of data on either stdout or stderr?
