Performing table inserts/selects while a alter-table query is running?

Hi All,

I got a client who has a database that needs some changes to it. Since the tables are very large in size ( many millions of records), I know the Alter Table commands will take a long time to perform.

Basically, I would rather not take down production to do this update.

My question is, if we keep the production web-server up and running, and someone inserts into the table I am altering, does mysql know to add those new rows someone inserted into the new altered table?

Or put another way, is it safe to leave a production server up an running for ALTER TABLE commands?

Thanks for your response in advance
