Database upgrade character column sizes may have changed

Hi everyone,

I had to upgrade a very old server and am having some trouble with getting the mysql databases to upgrade.

The old mysql server was running 4.0.x not sure what exact version and the new one is version 5.1.51. I can copy the database files over to the new server and "mysql_upgrade" but it produces a lot of warnings in mysqld.err.

[Warning] './mydatabase/mytable' had no or invalid character set, and default character set is multi-byte, so character column sizes may have changed.

I am worried that some of data could have been lost durring this upgrade. How can I make sure the tables upgrade correctly without the possibility of losing any data?
