Copying data folder between versions

Hello all,
I am currently using DoubleTake live replication software for my environment (including MySQL) to another server in another data center as our DR solution. Currently this is working fine but i need to upgrade my MySQL version. Currently, i am replicating the MySQL data directory to the other server. My question is, if i replicate the data directory from MySQL 5.5 to the data directory MySQL 5.1, will this cause any issues if i need to revert to my 5.1 server with the data directory of 5.5?
