Well when I run a similar query it takes 3 times longer with the order by part of the query. When I did the testing I used select id, creationdate AS unixdate, lastedit FROM ... instead of a select *.
Although interesting would this explain the problems with how quick the queries are when the index was created as opposed to a day later?
